Yeast naturally occurs in the vagina. Normally, the growth of yeast is regulated by the acidity of the vagina, but under certain conditions, the acidic balance can change and cause an overgrowth of yeast. This overgrowth causes a yeast infection.

ABOUT VAGINAL YEAST INFECTIONS (VYIs)
Yeast infections can cause symptoms such as:
- thick, white, odourless discharge
- pain during sexual intercourse
- vaginal soreness
- redness and swelling of the vaginal area
You should see your doctor about a yeast infection if:
- It's your first yeast infection, to rule out other causes of your symptoms.
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- You have recurrent yeast infections, which may indicate that you might have an underlying condition that makes you more susceptible to yeast infections.
Although sexual transmission is unlikely with a yeast infection, it is possible, so it's a good idea to abstain from intercourse while treating the infection.
Yeast infections can be caused by several different factors, including:
- Hormonal changes
- Lifestyle factors
- lack of sleep
- poor eating habits
- change in hygiene
- sexual activity
- Potential irritants
- hot humid weather
- continuous use of panty liners
- tight or damp clothing
- perfumed soaps
- Medication use
- oral contraceptives
- certain antibiotics
- certain steroids
- Medical conditions
- weakened immune system
You can help to minimize the risk of developing a vaginal yeast infection by:
- Wearing cotton underwear.
- Not wearing tight pants or clothing made from synthetic material like pantyhose.
- Limiting the use of scented hygiene products like sprays and bubble bath.
About DIFLUCAN ONE
DIFLUCAN ONE is a 1-pill, 1-dose, 1-day treatment that starts to relieve your symptoms within 24 hours. Since clearing a yeast infection does take time, the medication remains active in your body for several days as it works to cure the infection.
Women who are pregnant or breast-feeding should not use DIFLUCAN ONE. Also, if you are allergic to fluconazole or related azoles (such as clotrimazole or miconazole) or taking certain allergy medications, you should not use DIFLUCAN ONE.
The first time you have a vaginal yeast infection, you should see your doctor to rule out other possible conditions that may be causing your symptoms. Your doctor and you can decide if DIFLUCAN ONE is the right choice for you.
Possible side effects include headache, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Most side effects reported in clinical studies were mild to moderate in nature. Contact a doctor or pharmacist if you develop skin eruptions, experience a new rash or allergy symptoms such as hives.
Never take more than the recommended dose of one pill for a yeast infection. If you accidentally take more than one pill, contact your doctor or local poison control centre immediately, even if there are no symptoms.
